The majority of these measurements rely on problem gambling symptomatology, which are behavioural indicators and do not capture the full extent or nature of gambling harm.<\/p>\n
Several factors contribute to the development of gambling disorders. These include: genetics, environment, life events and circumstances, and family history. Problems with gambling are also often co-occurring with other harmful behaviours and lower levels of wellbeing.<\/p>\n
It is possible to recover from gambling disorder, but it can be difficult without the right support. Seek help from a friend or family member, a health professional, or a self-help group such as Gam-Anon. Try to avoid gambling altogether or only gamble with money you can afford to lose. Set time and money limits ahead of time, and never chase losses.<\/p>\n
Some people find that they gamble to relieve unpleasant emotions such as boredom, loneliness or depression. However, there are healthier and more effective ways of relieving these feelings, such as exercise, spending time with friends who don\u2019t gamble, or trying out new activities.<\/p>\n
Some types of gambling equipment can be tampered with, allowing cheating to occur. This can involve shaved dice, marked cards, mirror rings, rigging of machines, and other tampering with the normal operation of the game. Although cheating in this way is not common, it can lead to unfair outcomes and a distorted picture of the true risk of the game. Therefore, laws and regulations aimed at controlling cheating are necessary to protect the integrity of the game and the health of the player. However, many laws are more oriented towards efforts to generate tax revenues from gambling than to the control of cheating.
